Three post groups sit under CHSL, and the work differs more than candidates expect.

Data Entry Operator is exactly what the name says, with the volume and accuracy expectations that follow. DEO posts carry a higher typing requirement than clerical posts and in some departments sit at a higher pay level than LDC, which is why they attract candidates who can type quickly.

Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant work in the Department of Posts, handling counter operations, mail processing and sorting. The working environment differs from a ministry desk job, and postings follow the postal circle structure rather than the central secretariat.

Tier 1 exam pattern

The paper is objective multiple choice, delivered as a computer based test, with 60 minutes total. Each question carries 2 marks and there is negative marking of 0.50 marks for each wrong answer.

Candidates entitled to scribe provisions receive compensatory time, which appears on the admit card if it was claimed in the application.

Check your name and photograph against your identity document, the centre address, the reporting time and the shift. Reporting time is well ahead of the exam start, and the gate closes before the paper begins with no admission afterwards on any grounds.

Carry the printed admit card and one original photo identity document. Aadhaar, voter ID, PAN card, passport and driving licence are the usual accepted forms. Photocopies are not accepted and a photo on a phone is not accepted.

Leave every electronic device behind, including smart watches and fitness bands. Carrying a prohibited item into the hall can end in debarment from SSC examinations, a penalty far larger than losing one paper.

Tier 2 and the typing test that decides more than people think

Tier 2 combines a computer based examination with a skill test, and the skill test is where a large number of otherwise successful candidates lose the post.

For Data Entry Operator posts the requirement is a data entry speed measured in key depressions per hour, tested on a passage under timed conditions. For Lower Division Clerk, Junior Secretariat Assistant and Postal Assistant posts the requirement is a typing test in English or Hindi at a specified words per minute.

The skill test is qualifying. It adds nothing to your merit score. Failing it removes you from consideration for the posts that require it regardless of how well you performed in the written stages.

That combination, high stakes and zero marks, is exactly why candidates neglect it. Typing speed is a motor skill that takes weeks of daily practice to build and cannot be improvised in the fortnight after a result. Practise on a standard keyboard layout with the passage format the test actually uses, and practise accuracy before speed, because errors are penalised and a fast typist with poor accuracy fails.

The academic requirement is a pass in Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board or university.

The age band is 18 to 27 years, calculated against the cutoff date stated in the notification. Salary

CHSL posts sit at Pay Level 2 and Pay Level 4 on the 7th Pay Commission matrix depending on the post.

Lower Division Clerk and Junior Secretariat Assistant are at Pay Level 2, with an entry basic pay of Rs 19,900. Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant, and Data Entry Operator in several departments, sit at Pay Level 4 with an entry basic pay of Rs 25,500. Gross monthly pay is meaningfully above basic once dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are added. The posts carry pension under the National Pension System, medical benefits under the central government health scheme where available, and leave entitlements on the central government pattern.

Promotion from LDC runs through Upper Division Clerk and onward through the ministerial grades, and departmental examinations can accelerate that route. Candidates who treat CHSL as a permanent ceiling underestimate the internal progression available to those who sit departmental exams.

What to do between now and your exam

If your Tier 1 is still ahead, the highest-return work is General Awareness and accuracy in Quantitative Aptitude. General Awareness converts preparation into marks more directly than any other section, and it has no time pressure problem. Quantitative Aptitude at CHSL level rewards arithmetic fluency rather than advanced technique.

Sit full mocks under real conditions with the 0.50 penalty applied honestly. The purpose is to learn your realistic attempt count, not to maximise attempts. With negative marking, an unattempted question costs nothing and a low-confidence guess costs half a mark.

How CHSL compares with CGL and MTS

SSC runs three large recruitments that candidates often confuse, and the difference is the qualification gate rather than the difficulty.

The syllabus areas overlap heavily across all three: English, reasoning, quantitative aptitude and general awareness appear in each, at different depths. A candidate preparing for CHSL is substantially prepared for MTS and partly prepared for CGL, which is why sitting more than one in the same year is normal.

The practical advice is to sit every one you are eligible for. The preparation is shared, the exam calendars rarely collide badly, and the cost of an additional application is small against the chance of a posting. Candidates who hold out for CGL alone because the pay level is higher often spend several years doing it.

Answer key, objections and normalisation

After Tier 1 concludes SSC releases a provisional answer key alongside your response sheet, with a short window to raise objections against specific questions. There is a per-question fee that is refunded when an objection is upheld.

Take this seriously. SSC does drop or revise questions where objections are valid, and in an exam separated by fractions of a mark, one dropped question moves thousands of ranks.

Tier 1 scores are normalised because the exam runs across multiple shifts of differing difficulty. Normalisation adjusts raw marks so a candidate who sat a harder shift is not penalised for it.
