Rozgar Mela is a recruitment drive under which the Prime Minister distributes appointment letters to people newly appointed to central government posts. Now the part that matters most, because a great deal of what is published about this is wrong.

Rozgar Mela is the ceremony at which appointment letters are handed over. Every person receiving a letter there was already selected through a normal recruitment process: an SSC examination, a UPSC examination, a Railway Recruitment Board CEN, an IBPS examination, or a departmental recruitment. The mela is the last step of that journey, not an entry point to it.

What has happened so far

The cumulative figure is worth pausing on. The original target was 10 lakh recruitments, and roughly 12 lakh appointment letters have now been distributed, so the stated target has been passed. Which departments the recruits join

New appointees join 38 ministries and departments of the Government of India. The departments that recur most across editions are the ones with the largest workforces and the highest vacancy volumes.

Appointments span every level of the central service: Group A, Group B Gazetted, Group B Non-Gazetted, and Group C. So the letters handed out at a single mela can cover anything from a directly recruited officer to a Group C clerical appointee.

The routes that actually lead to a Rozgar Mela letter

Since Rozgar Mela is the destination rather than the door, the practical question is which examinations feed it. These are the main ones.

Notice what this means for timing. Someone receiving a letter at a mela in 2026 typically applied a year or more earlier, sat one or two examinations, cleared a physical or skill test where applicable, passed document verification and cleared a medical. The mela is the visible end of a long and largely invisible process.

Karmayogi Prarambh

Alongside the appointment letters, the government launched Karmayogi Prarambh, an online orientation course for new government appointees.

It runs on the iGOT Karmayogi platform, which carries more than 400 e-learning courses and is designed for access from any device. The orientation module covers what a new recruit needs at the start of government service: conduct rules, workplace ethics, the basics of the department they are joining, human resource policies, and general capacity building.

For a new appointee this is the practical first step after the letter arrives, and it is worth taking seriously rather than clicking through. Government service has procedural expectations that are rarely spelled out again after induction.

Three different things people confuse

A large share of the confusion around this subject comes from three unrelated things sharing similar names. They are worth separating clearly.

The middle one is the source of most of the misunderstanding, and it is also genuinely useful. District employment exchanges and state skill development departments run job fairs, often called rozgar melas, where employers conduct walk-in interviews. Those are real events you can attend, they do have registration, and they mostly offer private sector and contractual roles rather than permanent government posts. They are not the Prime Minister's Rozgar Mela.

Why the confusion exists at all

It is worth understanding why so many people search for a Rozgar Mela application, because the reason is not stupidity on their part.

The name invites it. A mela is an event people attend, and rozgar means employment, so "employment fair" is a reasonable reading of the words. District employment exchanges have run genuine job fairs under exactly that name for decades, so the term already meant something attendable long before 2022.

The coverage invites it too. Reporting on each edition leads with a large number of jobs and appointment letters, which reads to a job seeker as an opportunity being announced rather than as the conclusion of recruitments that closed a year or more earlier.

And the gap gets filled by sites that profit from the traffic. A search for a form that does not exist still produces pages offering one, because there is advertising revenue in ranking for a high-volume query regardless of whether the answer is real.

None of that is the searcher's fault. The correct response is simply to know what the initiative is, and to redirect the effort towards the examinations that actually lead to these posts.

How to spot the fake registration pages

Sites publishing Rozgar Mela registration forms are either confusing it with a district job fair or, in the worst cases, collecting personal data on the strength of a job promise. A few checks protect you.

There is no fee for any central government recruitment beyond the official examination fee paid on the recruiting body's own portal. Nobody collects a registration fee for a Rozgar Mela.

Central recruitment happens on official portals: ssc.gov.in, upsc.gov.in, rrbapply.gov.in, ibps.in and the individual department sites. A form hosted on a blog or a private site is not a government application.

An appointment letter follows an examination and a selection process. Any offer of a government appointment letter without an examination is not genuine.

Be careful with what you share. Aadhaar numbers, bank details and document scans handed to an unofficial "registration" site are the actual product being collected.

A realistic path to a central government job

Since the honest answer to "how do I get a Rozgar Mela letter" is "clear a recruitment examination", it is worth setting out what that path actually looks like rather than leaving it abstract.

Start by matching your qualification to the right examinations, because applying to things you are not eligible for wastes application fees and months.

Then work on the base that these examinations share. Quantitative aptitude, reasoning, general awareness and English recur across almost all of them, so preparation compounds across applications rather than being spent on one attempt. The subject-specific or trade-specific portion is what changes.

Apply broadly and continuously. The single biggest difference between candidates who get in and candidates who do not is often not ability but application volume: many aspirants apply to two or three examinations a year when they were eligible for eight or ten. Application windows are short, typically about a month, and there is no penalty for applying to several.

Track the official portals directly rather than through aggregators. Notifications, corrigenda and date changes appear on ssc.gov.in, rrbapply.gov.in, upsc.gov.in and ibps.in before they reach secondary sites.

Finally, plan for the full timeline. From application to appointment letter commonly runs 12 to 24 months across the examination stages, document verification and medical. Someone receiving a letter at a mela today applied a long time ago, and that is the horizon to plan against.

Does Rozgar Mela create new jobs?

Worth addressing directly, since it is the most common critical question.

Rozgar Mela is a filling exercise rather than a job creation programme. The posts handed out are existing sanctioned vacancies in ministries and departments, and the initiative directs those departments to fill them in mission mode rather than letting them sit vacant. So the effect is on the speed and visibility of recruitment against posts that already exist on paper, not on the creation of new posts.

That is a real effect and not a trivial one. Sanctioned vacancies in central departments have historically been slow to fill, and a coordinated push with a public deadline changes departmental behaviour. But a candidate should understand the mechanism accurately: the vacancies advertised by SSC, RRB, UPSC and the banks are the same vacancies whose appointment letters appear at these events.

What happens between selection and the letter

Candidates who have cleared an examination often assume the appointment letter follows within weeks, and the gap surprises them. The intervening steps are worth knowing.

After the final result, the recruiting body prepares a merit list and allocates candidates to departments, zones or regions based on merit and the preferences submitted during the application. Document verification follows, where originals are checked against everything claimed in the application, including category, age relaxation and educational qualification. A medical examination applies where the post carries a medical standard. Police verification and character antecedent checks are then carried out by the appointing department.

Only after all of that does the appointing department issue the appointment letter, and that is the document handed over at a Rozgar Mela or sent directly.

Two practical consequences follow. Keep every original document safe and accessible from the moment you apply, since the verification can come many months later and a missing certificate at that stage is a serious problem. And keep the contact details in your application current, because departments communicate through the email and mobile number on record, and candidates do lose appointments by missing communications sent to a number they stopped using.
