Beti Bachao Beti Padhao — India's Mission to Protect and Educate the Girl Child
India's Child Sex Ratio had fallen to an alarming 918 girls per 1000 boys (Census 2011). PM Modi launched Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) on January 22, 2015 in Panipat, Haryana — one of the worst-affected districts — with a clear message: a girl child's life has equal value, equal right to exist, and equal right to education.
BBBP is not just a single scheme — it is a nationwide social campaign backed by programmes, funds, and linked financial schemes.
What BBBP Does
1. Prevents Female Foeticide Strict enforcement of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act to ban sex-selective abortions. Awareness campaigns against dowry and son preference.
2. Protects the Girl Child Better birth registration, girl child immunisation drives, tracking girls who drop out of school, and sensitising community leaders, police, and health workers.
3. Promotes Girl Education Encouraging girl enrolment in schools, reducing dropout rates, and providing scholarships and support to girls to continue education beyond class 8.
The Financial Component — Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)
BBBP's savings component is the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY). If you have a daughter below 10 years of age, you can open an SSY account at any Post Office or authorised bank.
