What RAS/RTS Actually Means

Clearing RPSC RAS puts you in line for posts like Sub-Divisional Officer, Block Development Officer, Tehsildar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Commercial Tax Officer — all at the state-gazetted level in Rajasthan. These are decision-making positions, not clerical ones. An SDO manages an entire sub-division; a Tehsildar handles land records and revenue matters for lakhs of people.

The competition is fierce. Several lakh candidates apply; a few hundred make the final cut. The full process — from prelims to interview — typically takes 18–24 months. Most people who clear RAS spend 2–3 years preparing. Go in with realistic expectations.

Selection — Three Stages

Stage 1 — Preliminary Exam 150 questions, 200 marks, 3 hours. All GK and General Science — Rajasthan and India. Negative marking: 1/3 mark. This stage only determines who sits the Mains. Prelims marks don't count in your final score.

Typical shortlist ratio: 15× vacancies to Mains. With, say, 400 vacancies, around 6,000 people move forward.

Stage 2 — Main Exam (Descriptive, 5 Papers)

PaperSubjectMarksDuration
IGS I — History, Geography, Art & Culture (India + Rajasthan)2003 hours
IIGS II — Administration, Management, Current Affairs, Ethics2003 hours
IIIGS III — Science, Technology, Socio-Economic Issues, Agriculture2003 hours
IVGS IV — Ethics, Integrity, Aptitude2003 hours
VGeneral Hindi & General English2003 hours
Total1000

Stage 3 — Interview 100 marks. Final merit is Mains (1000) + Interview (100) = 1100 marks total.

Syllabus — What Really Matters

Prelims is mostly about speed and Rajasthan GK. Current RAS toppers score 130+ out of 200. If you're under 110, revisit your approach.

Rajasthan content that appears heavily: Rajput history, Rajasthan princely states during colonial rule, freedom movement in Rajasthan (Bijolia Kisan Andolan, Marwar agitation), Rajasthan geography (rivers — Chambal, Banas, Luni; districts; deserts; wildlife sanctuaries), Rajasthan folk art (phad painting, blue pottery, Kathputli), state economy, and current state government schemes.

Mains GS Papers: Rajasthan content appears in all four GS papers. For Paper I, the Rajasthan portion (history, art, culture, geography) is as significant as the India portion. Paper IV (Ethics) trips up many candidates who prepare it as an afterthought — structured answer writing with case study practice is needed 4–6 months before Mains.

General Hindi (Paper V): Essay (two essays, typically 800–1000 words each), précis, grammar, translation. Native Hindi speakers can score 150+ with practice; non-natives need 3 months of focused writing.

General English (Paper V shares space with Hindi): Letter writing, comprehension, grammar — standard difficulty. Don't ignore it in favour of Hindi.

How to Apply

  1. Log in to sso.rajasthan.gov.in (create an SSO ID first if you don't have one)

  3. Fill personal and educational details
  4. Upload photo and signature
  5. Pay fee online → submit

Honest Preparation Timeline

Most people who clear RAS in their first or second attempt spent 14–20 months in structured preparation. A rough breakdown that works: 4 months for Prelims, then pivot to Mains prep for 8–10 months, then 2 months for interview. Trying to prepare for Prelims and Mains simultaneously from Day 1 often leads to shallow coverage.

Rajasthan-specific coaching hubs (Jaipur, Ajmer) have strong local resources — both for books and test series. If you're self-studying outside Rajasthan, the Rajasthan portion is your biggest gap to fill.

Common Questions

How is RAS different from IAS? IAS is an all-India service (UPSC-selected), IAS officers can be posted to any state and hold more constitutional authority. RAS officers are state service officers, posted within Rajasthan. Exceptional RAS officers can be empanelled for IAS over time.

Are there any domicile restrictions? No domicile requirement for eligibility. But reserved-category age relaxation and fee concession apply only to Rajasthan domicile holders.

How many attempts are allowed? No cap on attempts — keep applying until you exceed the age limit.

Can I appear for both Prelims and Mains in the same year? Prelims and Mains are scheduled months apart, so yes — if selected after Prelims, you appear for Mains in the same recruitment cycle.
