LIC AAO 2026 — How to Prepare for the Generalist Post

Most banking exam aspirants treat LIC AAO like any other banking exam and then get a rude shock in the Mains. Because LIC AAO has one section that no other banking or insurance exam tests you on — Insurance & Financial Market Awareness — and if you ignore it, the Mains will be very painful.

The good news is that the exam has a clear pattern, the salary is outstanding (₹88,635 basic, ~₹1.26 lakh gross in metro cities), and if you have been preparing for IBPS PO or SBI PO, you already have a head start on 75% of the syllabus.

Here's how to approach LIC AAO 2026 properly.

The Exam Has 4 Stages — Know What Matters

Stage 1 — Prelims (Qualifying only): 100 questions in 60 minutes. Reasoning (35), Quantitative Aptitude (35), English (30). Your Prelims score does NOT count in final merit. Just clear the cutoff and move on.

Stage 2 — Mains (This decides your rank): 300 marks objective + 25 marks descriptive.

Stage 3 — Interview. Final merit = Mains + Interview combined.

Stage 4 — Medical exam before appointment.

Section-wise Preparation Plan

Reasoning & Numerical Ability (90 marks — your scoring zone)

This is the highest-marks section. The level is similar to IBPS PO Mains. Focus on:

Reasoning: Puzzles, seating arrangement (linear and circular), blood relations, direction sense, coding-decoding, syllogisms, inequalities. Puzzles are typically 3-4 sets with 5 questions each — crack these and you've secured 15-20 marks.

Numerical Ability: Data Interpretation is the backbone here — practice table, bar chart, pie chart, and caselet DI sets. Also cover simplification, number series, percentage, profit and loss, time and work.

Target: 55+ out of 90.

Insurance & Financial Market Awareness (60 marks — the differentiator)

This is what separates serious LIC AAO candidates from the rest. Most people who come from a banking exam background either skip it or study it superficially — and they suffer.

What to study:

  • Types of life insurance: Term insurance, endowment plans, money-back plans, whole life plans, ULIPs (Unit Linked Insurance Plans), child plans
  • LIC's key products: Jeevan Anand, Jeevan Labh, Jeevan Umang, New Endowment Plan, Bima Jyoti — know the basic features of each
  • Insurance terminology: Premium, sum assured, surrender value, bonus, maturity value, claim, nominee, beneficiary, policy lapse, reinstatement, exclusions
  • IRDAI (Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India): What it does, who heads it, major regulations, recent circulars
  • Government insurance schemes: PMJJBY (Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana — term insurance at ₹436/year), PMSBY (accident insurance at ₹20/year), Atal Pension Yojana
  • Reinsurance basics: What it is, GIC Re (General Insurance Corporation — India's national reinsurer)
  • Financial market basics: Stock market, mutual funds, bonds, RBI's role, inflation and interest rate relationship

Best sources: Arihant's Insurance Awareness book, IRDAI's official website for recent news, and the last 6 months of insurance-related current affairs from GKToday or AffairsCloud.

English Language (90 marks — don't underestimate it)

LIC AAO Mains English is harder than IBPS PO English. Reading Comprehension passages are longer and the vocabulary usage is more advanced.

Focus areas: RC (2-3 passages, 4-5 questions each), cloze test, error spotting, para jumbles, fill in the blanks, and vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms in context).

Descriptive English (25 marks): You have to write one essay and one formal letter in 30 minutes. Practice writing 200-250 word essays on topics like — importance of life insurance, government's role in financial inclusion, digital India and insurance penetration. Also practice formal letters like writing to a bank about a complaint or to an authority about a scheme.

General Knowledge & Current Affairs (60 marks)

Focus on the last 6 months of news. Pay special attention to:

  • RBI monetary policy decisions (repo rate, CRR, SLR)
  • IRDAI announcements and new regulations
  • Union Budget highlights
  • New government schemes
  • Awards, appointments, international summits
  • LIC itself — new products, financial results, government stake

Resource: One good daily current affairs app (GKToday or Testbook's daily GK) plus a monthly current affairs PDF.

Realistic Study Timeline (Assuming Notification in August 2026)

If the notification comes in August 2026 and Prelims is October 2026, you have roughly 8-10 weeks.

Weeks 1-3: Build foundation. Reasoning basics + QA topics + start Insurance Awareness. Spend 1 hour daily on insurance topics — read one insurance type or regulation per day.

Weeks 4-6: Practice phase. Attempt 2-3 mock tests per week. Focus heavily on DI sets and RC passages. Continue daily current affairs.

Weeks 7-8: Mocks + revision. Attempt full-length Prelims mocks daily. Review weak areas. Revise Insurance Awareness notes.

After Prelims → Mains (2-3 weeks): Shift entirely to Mains-level practice. The Descriptive paper needs dedicated daily writing practice — 1 essay + 1 letter every day.

One Thing Most Candidates Get Wrong

They treat LIC AAO like an IBPS PO clone and neglect Insurance Awareness. In the Mains, Reasoning + English together carry 180 marks — but Insurance Awareness's 60 marks can make or break your rank. A candidate who scores 45/60 in Insurance while others score 25/60 gains a 20-mark advantage that no amount of extra Reasoning practice can compensate for.

Study insurance seriously. It is manageable, it is learnable, and it is your biggest opportunity to differentiate yourself.
