NEET SS 2026 — Complete Guide
NEET SS is the final frontier for doctors who want to reach the highest level of medical specialization in India. After MBBS, after MD or MS, comes DM (Doctorate of Medicine) or MCh (Magister Chirurgiae) — the super-specialties. Whether you want to become a cardiologist, neurosurgeon, gastroenterologist, or oncologist, NEET SS is the exam you must clear.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has confirmed the exam dates: December 11–12, 2026. Registration is expected to open in September–October 2026. Given how niche this exam is — only practicing doctors with a postgraduate medical degree can sit for it — the competition pool is far smaller than NEET UG or NEET PG, but it is intensely competitive because every candidate is a specialist.

What Is DM / MCh?
DM (Doctorate of Medicine) is a 3-year super-specialty qualification in medical branches like:
- Cardiology (DM Cardiology)
- Neurology (DM Neurology)
- Gastroenterology (DM Gastroenterology)
- Nephrology (DM Nephrology)
- Endocrinology (DM Endocrinology)
- Medical Oncology (DM Oncology)
- Pulmonology / Critical Care
MCh (Magister Chirurgiae) is a 3-year super-specialty qualification in surgical branches like:
- Neurosurgery (MCh Neurosurgery)
- Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery (MCh CTVS)
- Plastic Surgery (MCh Plastic Surgery)
- Paediatric Surgery (MCh Paediatric Surgery)
- Urology (MCh Urology)
- Surgical Oncology (MCh Surgical Oncology)
Eligibility
To appear for NEET SS 2026, you must hold an MD, MS, or DNB degree in the relevant broad specialty corresponding to the DM/MCh programme you want to join. For example:
- To apply for DM Cardiology → you need MD General Medicine (or MD Internal Medicine)
- To apply for MCh Neurosurgery → you need MS General Surgery
You must also have a valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or a State Medical Council and have completed your postgraduate degree before the exam date.
The NBE also allows candidates with DNB (Diplomate of National Board) in the relevant broad specialty to appear — this is an important inclusion that many candidates miss.
Exam Pattern
NEET SS is conducted over two days — December 11 and 12, 2026. Different super-specialty papers are allotted to different time slots across these two days.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer Based Test (CBT) |
| Duration | 3 hours 30 minutes (210 minutes) |
| Total Questions | 150 |
| Total Marks | 600 |
| Marking Scheme | +4 correct, -1 wrong |
| Question Type | Single Best Response (SBR) MCQs |
The syllabus for each paper is specific to the super-specialty being applied for and covers advanced topics in the corresponding broad specialty. Most of the questions are clinical and case-based — you're tested on your ability to diagnose and manage complex cases, not just recall facts.
How Counselling Works After NEET SS
After results, seats are allotted through two separate counselling processes:
MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) handles All India Quota seats in government medical colleges and deemed universities.
State Counselling Authorities handle seats in state government medical colleges under state quota.
DM/MCh seats in government colleges are highly sought-after and limited — most major government teaching hospitals offer only 2–4 seats per super-specialty per year. Private colleges have more seats but significantly higher fees.
How Many Seats Are Available?
Super-specialty seats are limited across India. The total DM/MCh seats (government + private) across all colleges is roughly 3,000–4,000. The most popular and competitive branches are DM Cardiology, DM Neurology, MCh Neurosurgery, MCh Urology, and DM Gastroenterology.
Preparation Strategy
Since this is an advanced exam for practicing doctors, most candidates rely on:
- Subject-specific standard textbooks for the DM/MCh specialty they're targeting
- Previous year NEET SS question papers (available on nbe.edu.in)
- Focus on clinical scenarios and evidence-based medicine questions
- Platforms like PrepLadder (which has NEET SS modules), DoctutorialsLite, and Marrow for MCQ practice
Given the short preparation window between application (October) and exam (December), most candidates who clear NEET SS have been preparing throughout their MD/MS years.
Application Fee
NEET SS registration fee is approximately ₹4,250 for General/OBC candidates and ₹3,250 for SC/ST/PwBD candidates. Payment is online. The fee is non-refundable once paid, so confirm your eligibility before registering.
