CTET September 2026 is scheduled for 6 September 2026, per the CBSE notification released on 11 May 2026 at ctet.nic.in. The application window closed on 10 June 2026 and the correction window ran from 15 to 18 June 2026. If you've registered, you have about 11 weeks to prepare.
What CTET is and who needs it
The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) is a national-level exam conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) that certifies your eligibility to teach in central government schools. Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), and other centrally administered school systems require a valid CTET certificate before hiring teachers for classes 1 to 8.
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) extended CTET certificate validity to a lifetime in 2021, replacing the earlier 7-year limit. Once you clear the exam, the certificate stays valid for your entire career.
CTET certifies your eligibility to apply for teaching posts but doesn't result in direct appointment.

Syllabus for Paper 1
Paper 1 covers five sections, all weighted equally at 30 marks each.
Child development and pedagogy
Covers child development from ages 6 to 11, theories of learning (including constructivist approaches by Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky), individual differences among learners, inclusive education, and assessment methods at the primary level. Questions test your understanding of how children learn, not just definitions of terms.
Language I
Tests reading comprehension, basic grammar, and teaching methodology for your chosen medium of instruction. The language you pick for Language I must be your planned medium of teaching. Most candidates choose Hindi or English.
Language II
Tests a second language at comprehension and teaching-approach level. Language II must differ from your Language I choice. Questions are less grammar-intensive than Language I and focus on comprehension and language pedagogy.
Mathematics
Topics include shapes, spatial understanding, place value, basic arithmetic, patterns, measurement, and simple data handling at the primary level. Questions also test how to teach these concepts to learners between ages 6 and 11.
Environmental studies
Covers food, shelter, water, plants, animals, the local environment, travel, and family relationships. The section tests both content knowledge and teaching methods for EVS, including how to encourage observation and inquiry in young learners.
Syllabus for Paper 2
Paper 2 covers four sections, with the subject section carrying 60 marks, double the weight of each other section.
Child development and pedagogy
Focuses on learner development at the upper-primary stage, typically ages 11 to 14. Topics include motivation, individual differences, social and cultural factors in learning, inclusive education for diverse learners, and formative assessment methods suited to classes 6 to 8.
Language I and Language II
Same structure as Paper 1 but with questions tailored to upper-primary pedagogy. Reading comprehension passages are more complex than Paper 1, and language-teaching questions are framed around adolescent learners.
Mathematics and science (for candidates choosing this section)
Maths covers number systems, algebra, geometry, mensuration, data handling, and problem-solving at the upper-primary level. Science covers food and materials, the living world, motion and force, natural phenomena, and natural resources. Each content area includes questions on how to teach that subject to classes 6 to 8.
Social studies (for candidates choosing this section)
History covers periods from ancient to modern India. Geography covers natural resources, the environment, and human-environment interaction. Political science and economics appear through the Social and Political Life units. Pedagogy questions test approaches to teaching social science through discussion and inquiry at the upper-primary level.
How to prepare for CTET September 2026
6 September 2026 is the exam date. Candidates registering by June have roughly 11 weeks.
NCERT textbooks for classes 1 to 8 are the foundation for subject-specific questions. For child development and pedagogy, your D.El.Ed or B.Ed course material is more relevant than NCERT. The pedagogy section draws directly from standard teacher-training texts, not school-level content.
Previous year question papers are the most efficient study material. CTET follows a consistent question style across sessions, especially in the pedagogy sections. Working through papers from multiple past sessions gives you a clearer sense of the exam than spending the same time on new books.
For Language I and Language II, comprehension passages and grammar questions follow predictable formats. Practice reading passages and answer the questions in timed conditions to build both accuracy and speed.
For Paper 2's subject section, NCERT textbooks for classes 6, 7, and 8 cover the content portion. Pair those with pedagogy notes from your B.Ed or D.El.Ed program for the teaching-method questions.
To pass Paper 1 as a General category candidate, you need 90 out of 150. That means you can get 60 questions wrong and still qualify. A candidate who focuses on weaker sections in the first four weeks and shifts to full-length mock tests in the final six weeks covers the preparation well.
Frequently asked questions
Is CTET 2026 online or offline?
CTET 2026 is an offline exam conducted with a physical OMR sheet. The application process, fee payment, and admit card download are done online through ctet.nic.in.
How many times can you appear in CTET?
CBSE doesn't restrict the number of CTET attempts. You can appear every session until you pass, or to improve your existing score.
Is the CTET certificate valid for life?
Yes. NCTE extended CTET certificate validity to a lifetime in 2021. Candidates who passed in earlier sessions and held 7-year certificates are also covered under this extension.
What's the difference between CTET and state TET?
CTET qualifies you to apply for teaching jobs in central government schools such as KVS and NVS. Each state runs its own Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for state government school posts. You need your state's TET for state-run schools and CTET for centrally administered schools.
Can I appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2 in the same session?
Yes, if you meet the eligibility requirements for each paper. The fee applies separately per paper, as per the fee structure above.
